The black soldier fly (BSF), Hermetia illucens, is a valuable insect species whose larvae have enormous potentials for converting organic waste into compost,
while the larval biomass generated could also be harvested for its protein and fatty acid content.

BSF can be used to compost organic waste, creating nutrient-rich soil amendments by harvesting the digestate and serving as feed for animals by harvesting the immature flies (larvae or pupae).
The entire life cycle of the black soldier fly is approximately 38 days

They are not a pest to humans. Unlike houseflies, adult black soldier flies have greatly reduced sponging mouthparts and can only consume liquids such as flower nectar or do not eat at all.
They do not regurgitate food along with digestive enzymes like houseflies, thus do not spread diseases.…

While mosquitoes only have some niche benefits for the earth, black flies have an important role to play in the ecosystem of streams and rivers, as their larvae feed dragonflies, trout, and other fish that can be found in similar environments.

The Black Soldier Fly (BSF) is often considered a pest insect, but it actually has many beneficial traits. BSF larvae are high in protein and grow very quickly, plus they can feed on nearly any type of organic waste.
